Let's talk about the major electricity crisis we are facing in South Africa, thanks to the lack of long term forward planning by Eskom. I don’t think it is even necessary to go into detail about the harsh lesson we have learnt when the crisis first started disrupting our traffic, businesses and personal lives, is it?

This crisis is threefold:

The National Electricity Council of South Africa has granted Eskom tariff increases over the next three years of 24.8% in 2010; 25.8% in 2011; and 25.9% in 2012.

WE shall therefore have to absorb a threefold increase in the cost of Eskom power over the next less than 3 years, while new power stations are being built;

On top of this, the cost of electricity will still be rising in leaps and bounds for the next 5 to 10 years while research is being done into alternative sources of power supply; AND

We shall in the meantime be contributing more and more to Global Warning – because the more coal burning power stations come into operation, the more we shall be polluting the air, speeding up the “greenhouse effect” that the world is supposed to be reversing.

The only way we can prevent the crippling effect of recurring power outages – euphemistically called “load shedding” – on our economy and private lives; and lessen the financial burden of ever-increasing electricity tariffs, is by USING LESS ESKOM POWER.

But how does one do that without lowering your lifestyle?
